Byron Beeler accumulated a broad range of work experience in agriculture. Having begun in horticulture, he made his career through field crops, seed production and sales, pesticides and crop protection, and finally animal health. He used his knowledge, energy and contacts to lead, educate, and stimulate others to bring important change and improvement to his industry.
Byron was born and educated in Nova Scotia, finally at NSAC. He moved to McGill for a B.Sc. (Agr), then to O.A.C. for a M.Sc.(Agr). He began his working career as a horticultural crop specialist for the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture in Picton, taking time to do an early morning radio show for his farmers. His ability to express ideas clearly and simply made it easy for him to move into mentoring and leading in 4-H, beginning a relationship with that organization which continued at higher levels throughout his career.
His government service continued in Vineland and then as director of Soils & Crops for the province, where his growing interest in seed production and breeding persuaded him to move to the private sector with Stewart Seeds. Again, his leadership talent led him to become active in the Canadian Seed Trade Association, and a strong advocate of Plant Breeders Rights. His vision and leadership led to the eventual passage of that Act in 1990.
When Stewart Seeds was merged with Funk’s by Ciba-Geigy, Byron moved on up in the corporate world from sales and marketing at Stewart, through general manager at Ciba-Geigy Seed Division, to vice-president at Ciba-Geigy Agricultural Division, and finally president of Novartis Animal Health Inc. when Ciba-Geigy merged with Sandoz. At each step of his career he was active and recognized for vigorous support of industry organizations as a volunteer: President of the Ontario Institute of Agrologists; committee chair in the Canadian Agricultural Chemicals Association; president of the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair; member of the Dean’s Advisory Council of OAC, OVC, and Macdonald College; and even after retirement, chair of the Equine Guelph Advisory Council.
It is not surprising that Byron Beeler has been recognized by many of the organizations for which he volunteered. Beyond them, however, he is an Honorary Companion of the University of Guelph, an Honorary Life Member of the Canadian Animal Health Institute, a Fellow of the Agricultural Institute of Canada, and a winner of the Novartis World Wide Business Excellence Award in 1997, and many others.
Byron Beeler a acquis une vaste expérience de travail dans le secteur agricole. Ayant commencé en
horticulture, il a fait sa carrière dans les grandes cultures, la production et la vente de semences, les pesticides
et la protection des cultures et finalement dans la santé animale. Il a fait appel à ses connaissances, son
énergie et ses contacts pour entrainer, instruire et à inciter d’autres à apporter d’importantes innovations à son
industrie.
Byron est né et a fait ses études en Nouvelle-Écosse, finissant au Nova Scotia Agricultural College. Il a ensuite
obtenu un B. Sc. (Agr) à McGill, puis un M.Sc. (Agr) de l’Ontario Agricultural College. Il a commencé sa carrière
professionnelle en tant que spécialiste des cultures horticoles pour le ministère de l’Agriculture de l’Ontario à
Picton, en animant en même temps une émission de radio du matin pour les agriculteurs. Grâce à sa capacité à
exprimer des idées clairement et simplement, il devient un mentor et un leader dans le Club des 4-H, une
relation professionnelle qu’il aura tout au long de sa carrière.
Son service public a continué lorsqu’il était à Vineland et puis en tant que directeur des sols et des cultures pour
le gouvernement provincial, où son intérêt dans la production de semences et l’élevage l’ont persuadé de se
réorienter vers le secteur privé avec Stewart Seeds. Encore une fois, son talent de leadership l’a amené à
s’engager dans l’Association canadienne du commerce des semences, et d’être un ardent défenseur de la loi
sur la protection des droits d’auteurs des hybrideurs végétaux. Sa vision et son leadership ont aidé l’adoption de
cette loi en 1990.
Lorsque Stewart Seeds a été fusionné avec Funk par Ciba-Geigy, Byron continua son ascencion depuis la
vente et le marketing à Stewart, au poste de directeur général de la division des semences de Ciba-Geigy, au
poste de vice-président de la direction agricole à Ciba-Geigy, et enfin comme président de Novartis Animal
Health Inc. lorsque Ciba-Geigy s’est fusionné avec Sandoz. À chaque étape de sa carrière, il a été engagé et
reconnu pour le soutien vigoureux des organisations de l’industrie en tant que bénévole: Président de l’Institut
des agronomes de l’Ontario; président de comité au sein de l’Association canadienne des produits chimiques
agricoles; président du Royal Agricultural Winter Fair; membre du conseil consultatif du doyen de l’Ontario
Agricultural College, de l’Ontario Veteranary College, et du Collège Macdonald; et même après sa retraite, il a
siégé en tant que président du Equine Guelph Advisory Council.
Il n’est pas surprenant que Byron Beeler ait été reconnu par la plupart des organisations pour lesquelles il s’est
porté volontaire. Il est un Compagnon honoraire de l’University of Guelph, membre honoraire à vie de l’Institut
canadien de la santé animale, un Fellow de l’Institut agricole du Canada, et un lauréat du Prix Novartis World
Wide Business Excellence en 1997, et bien d’autres.
