Hon. Adelard Godbout

A man who devoted his life to the improvement of agriculture and to the social and economic development of his native province.
During his career, Adelard Godbout served as professor of animal husbandry at Ste. Anne de la Pocatière, a Minister of Agriculture and Premier of his native province, Senator, and successful farmer.
While in public office many progressive policies were introduced, including: the establishment of Quebec Hydro; the extension of hydro to rural areas; the development of agricultural lands in northern Quebec; the establishment of a drainage plan thereby paving the way for the reclamation or improvement of thousands of acres of wetlands; the establishment of a sugar beet industry; the introduction of compulsory; free education; and the extension of the voting franchise to women.
In 1949, he was appointed to the Canadian Senate and in the years following this appointment became actively engaged in farming, specializing in the production of Shorthorn cattle and apples.
Agronome de profession, Adélard Godbout a consacré sa vie à l’amélioration de l’agriculture et au développement social et économique de sa province natale.
Au cours de sa carrière, Adélard Godbout a été professeur en gestion de troupeau à l’École supérieure d’agriculture de Sainte-Anne-de-La-Pocatière, Ministre de l’Agriculture et Premier ministre de sa province natale, puis Sénateur canadien et agriculteur émérite.
De nombreuses politiques progressistes ont été introduites durant son mandat politique, notamment la création d’Hydro-Québec, l’électrification rurale, le développement agricole du Nord-Ouest québécois, la mise en place d’un plan de drainage des sols qui pava la voie à la remise en état ou la mise en valeur de milliers d’acres de terres humides, la mise en place d’une industrie de la betterave à sucre, l’introduction d’une éducation gratuite et obligatoire et la reconnaissance du droit de vote des femmes.
En 1949, il a été nommé au Sénat canadien et, au cours des années qui ont suivi, il s’est adonné activement à l’élevage de bovins Shorthorn et à la pomiculture.
