Throughout his career that spanned over 60 years, Gordon Townsend became known as a world-wide authority in the field of apiculture. His research efforts brought many benefits to Canadians and many others in various countries around the world.
Soon after graduating from the Ontario Agricultural College, Gordon Townsend obtained his M.Sc., while working under Sir Frederick Banting, at the Banting Institute. His graduate studies were on royal jelly. He later became head of the apiculture department at the Ontario Agricultural College and was appointed Provincial Apiarist to administer the Bees Act of Ontario.
Many of Prof. Townsend’s contributions were made at the international level. In 1971, he travelled to South America with a committee selected by the US National Academy of Sciences to assess the impact of African bees in South America. For many years he was a member of the International Bee Research Association that organizes and stores research information for apicultural research establishments.
During the years 1969-1983, through the University of Guelph, Gordon planned and organized a CIDA project to show beekeepers of Kenya how to improve their colony operations and produce more honey of better quality and thereby increase incomes. Gordon Townsend provided leadership to numerous national and international organizations.
In 1980 Prof. Townsend received a Life membership from the Ontario Beekeepers’ Association, and the following year was named Professor Emeritus in recognition of his contributions to the beekeeping industry worldwide.
Tout au long de sa carrière de plus de 60 ans, Gordon Townsend est devenu une autorité à l’échelle mondiale dans le domaine de l’apiculture. Ses efforts de recherche ont apporté de nombreux avantages pour les Canadiens et plusieurs autres dans divers pays à travers le monde.
Peu de temps après son diplôme du Collège de l’agriculture de l’Ontario, Gordon Townsend a obtenu son M.Sc., tout en travaillant sous Sir Frederick Banting, à l’Institut Banting. Ses études supérieures ont porté sur la gelée royale. Plus tard, il fut nommé chef du département de l’apiculture au Collège d’agriculture de l’Ontario et a été nommé Apiculteur provincial pour administrer la Loi ontarienne sur les abeilles.
Le professeur Townsend a beaucoup contribué à l’avancement de cette industrie au niveau international. En 1971, il est allé en Amérique du Sud avec un comité choisi par le US National Academy of Sciences afin d’évaluer l’impact des abeilles africaines en Amérique du Sud. Pendant de nombreuses années, il a été membre de l’Association internationale de recherches apicoles qui organise et collectionne les informations relatives aux recherches pour les centres de recherche en apiculture.
Pendant les années 1969 à 1983, par le compte de l’Université de Guelph, Gordon a planifié et organisé un projet de l’ACDI pour montrer aux apiculteurs du Kenya comment améliorer leurs opérations de colonies pour produire plus de miel de meilleure qualité afin d’augmenter leurs revenus. Gordon Townsend a fourni beaucoup de leadership pour de nombreuses organisations nationales et internationales.
En 1980, le professeur Townsend a reçu un membership à vie de l’Ontario Beekeepers’ Association, et l’année suivante, a été nommé Professeur émérite en reconnaissance de ses contributions à l’industrie de l’apiculture à travers le monde.
