A visionary leader in Canada’s agri-food sector, Gaétan Desroches modernized the country’s largest agricultural cooperative, laying the foundation for a more innovative, resilient and sustainable sector for Quebec and Canada.
Born into a family of entrepreneurs, Gaétan developed a shared value for agriculture early in his career. An agronomist by training, he dedicated 43 years to the Sollio Cooperative Group, formerly La Coop fédérée, as a tireless ambassador for the agri-food sector.
At Sollio, Gaétan made a lasting and profound impact by distinguishing himself for his ability to combine strategic vision with a keen understanding of realities and issues facing agriculture. He developed a culture of collaboration, adaptation and pride, and positioned the cooperative model as a pillar of the Canadian agri-food chain, while giving producers tools to tackle technological, economic and climatic challenges.
Gaétan rose through the ranks at Sollio to become CEO in 2014, leading major transformations and remarkable growth that would consolidate and strengthen the organization. Under his professional guidance, Sollio saw sales rise from $5.3 billion to $8.2 billion in six years and received the added distinction as one of Canada’s Best Managed Companies.
Widely respected for his ability to rally those with diverse interests and guide to strategic decisions that would advance the agricultural industry, Gaétan secured several strategic acquisitions for Sollio during his tenure, including Agrico, Maizex and BMR. Today, Sollio has a membership of more than 120,000 members, producersand consumers, and approximately 14,500 employees across the country.
In collaboration with Laval University, Gaétan developed Sollio’s first research farm at Saint-Hyacinthe – an innovative initiative to ensure resilient and sustainable crop options for local producers. He masterfully steered the restructuring of the cooperative network, piloting the Vision 2020 project that confirmed the central role of producers to strengthen the resilience of the model in Canada that would ensure its long-term sustainability.
One of Gaétan’s lasting projects was the modernizing of the cooperative’s image to see the transition to the Sollio Cooperative Group, positioning the company in a global context to facilitate international expansion while preserving its Quebec roots.
Recognized for his significant and lasting contributions to the industry, Gaétan has been honoured as a member of the Cooperative and Mutual Order of Quebec, a recipient of the Order of Agronomic Merit Award by the Order of Agronomists of Quebec, and with the AQINAC Entrepreneurial Excellence Award.

Issu d’une famille d’entrepreneurs, Gaétan a développé très tôt dans sa carrière une valeur partagée pour l’agriculture. Agronome de formation, il a consacré 43 ans à la Coopérative Sollio, anciennement La Coop Fédérée, en tant qu’ambassadeur infatigable du secteur agroalimentaire.
Chez Sollio, Gaétan a eu un impact durable et profond en se distinguant par sa capacité à combiner une vision stratégique avec une compréhension approfondie des réalités et des enjeux de l’agriculture. Il a développé uneculture de collaboration, d’adaptation et de fierté, et a positionné le modèle coopératif comme un pilier de la chaîne agroalimentaire canadienne, tout en donnant aux producteurs les outils nécessaires pour relever les défistechnologiques, économiques et climatiques.
Gaétan a gravi les échelons chez Sollio pour devenir PDG en 2014, menant des transformations majeures et une croissance remarquable qui ont consolidé et renforcé l’organisation. Sous sa direction professionnelle, Sollio a vu ses ventes passer de 5,3 milliards de dollars à 8,2 milliards de dollars en six ans et a ainsi reçu la distinction de figurer parmi les entreprises les mieux gérées au Canada.
Largement respecté pour sa capacité à rallier des personnes aux intérêts divers et à orienter les décisionsstratégiques qui font progresser l’industrie agricole, Gaétan a réalisé plusieurs acquisitions stratégiques pour Solliopendant son mandat, notamment Agrico, Maizex et BMR. Aujourd’hui, Sollio compte plus de 120 000 membres, producteurs et consommateurs, et environ 14 500 employés à travers le pays.
En collaboration avec l’Université Laval, Gaétan a développé la première ferme de recherche de Sollio à Saint-Hyacinthe, une initiative innovante visant à garantir des options de cultures résilientes et durables pour les producteurs locaux. Il a magistralement dirigé la restructuration du réseau coopératif, pilotant le projet Vision 2020 qui a confirmé le rôle central des producteurs dans le renforcement de la résilience du modèle au Canada, garantissant ainsi sa viabilité à long terme.
L’un des projets durables de Gaétan a été la modernisation de l’image de la coopérative pour accompagner la transition vers le Groupe coopératif Sollio, positionnant l’entreprise dans un contexte mondial afin de faciliter son expansion internationale tout en préservant ses racines québécoises.
Reconnu pour ses contributions importantes et durables à l’industrie, Gaétan a été honoré en tant que membre de l’Ordre des coopératives et des mutuelles du Québec, récipiendaire de l’Ordre du mérite agronomique de l’Ordredes agronomes du Québec et lauréat du prix d’excellence entrepreneuriale de l’AQINAC.
