R. J. Speers

Although best known as a leading breeder of Thoroughbred horses, Mr. Speers was instrumental in initiating many projects that have had a profound effect upon the “sport of kings.” Among them: a governing body for racing in western Canada; daily double wagering and the enclosed stall starting gate. His device was the first one used in North America.

Aside from his horse breeding and racing activities, he operated a large cattle ranch in Manitoba, a feedlot in Quebec and conducted extensive grain growing operations in both Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
