The name Robert E. Ness is synonymous with dedication to and promotion of the dairy industry and genetic improvement programs for dairy cattle. Throughout his career, Robert Ness has shown great dedication to his family, Terrance Bank Farms, and to his community. He invested time in the next generation by serving as 4-H club leader for 33 years and hosting the Howick Achievement Day for 36 years.
An outstanding ambassador for Canadian genetics and Ayrshires, and an internationally respected judge, Mr. Ness promoted genetic improvement in countries on five continents. During these trips, he took the time to meet with the local breeders to initiate an exchange of ideas. Many of these trips resulted in opening new markets for fellow Canadian Ayrshire breeders. Always active in association business and the marketing of Canadian cattle, he used his own herd many times as a showcase for foreign delegations.
As a believer in the Canadian genetics system, from young sire proving programs to the development and use of advanced technology, Mr. Ness has served on boards of CIAQ Inc. (8 years), Boviteq Inc (3 years) and Semex Canada (7 years).
Contributions by Mr. Ness span decades in the Huntingdon-Howick Ayrshire Club, Quebec Ayrshire Society, Ormstown Fair, Macdonald College, Ayrshire Canada, the World Ayrshire Breed Society and their various committees. He was national president of Ayrshire Canada in 1978 and in 1986 was recognized as Superior Breeder by the association.
Sportsmanship, showmanship and fair play are qualities Robert Ness exemplifies and instills through exhibiting locally, provincially and nationally. He has not missed a Royal Winter Fair since 1946. He declined two invitations to judge at the Royal so he could show with his fellow breeders.
In 1993, Mr. Ness was honoured with the Curtis Clark Award recognizing him as an exhibitor/breeder who has earned respect of his peers and has exemplified outstanding leadership while promoting his breed.
