A leading breeder, importer and exporter of Ayrshire cattle, whose Burnside herd achieved fame throughout the world.
Robert R. Ness was a self-made man. The herd, which he established at the age of 19, was developed to a high state of perfection under his management. In developing the herd, many outstanding animals were imported from Scotland. As the reputation of Burnside cattle became more widespread, orders began to arrive from other countries, notably the United States, South America, New Zealand and Japan. Thus, at one time he was Canada’s largest importer and exporter of purebred cattle.
Mr. Ness helped to develop men as well as cattle. Many fine young Scots acted upon his advice and migrated to this country. After receiving their early training under his guidance, the majority made their mark in Canadian agriculture.
Mr. Ness was awarded the Member of the British Empire and the Order of the British Empire in 1943 for his contribution to this great industry.
